MUST VISIT

 NOLAY ‘Cep en Verre’
Vines, wines, and merriment is the heady mix of fun to be had in our featured town of Nolay in the Haute Côte de Beaune… the question is, can you keep up the pace in a festival known as the ‘Cep en Verre’?
MUST VISIT: NOLAY ‘Cep en Verre’
In the centre of the historic town of Nolay, there’s some fun and education to be had with the gathering of over 40 local craftsmen and women who invite you to share in their know-how. Included in this impressive line-up are nine winemakers from the Hautes-Côtes de Beaune who are celebrating the 50-years-old appellation ‘Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes’, and what better way to do it than through a degustation (tasting).

So, the date to mark in your calendars is the weekend of 6th & 7th August.

Meanwhile, giant wooden games will provide fun for all the family and there will also be workshops for the kids, and we mean kids of all ages (including adults), along with demonstrations by ceramics artists, basket weavers, blacksmiths, wood turners and a whole lot more.

The thing about the ‘Cep en Verre’ festival is that it is a community event that embraces visitors and tourist alike… Burgundians know how to do this sort of event really well. For example, on the Sunday (7th August) there’s a stroll out into the surrounding countryside. It’s four-mile walk moving between woodland and vineyards with six tasting stages and a meal at one of the vineyards along the way. (Ed: You can see why it’s a stroll!), Kids are welcome too, although the obvious applies, but they will have the opportunity to put Mom and Dad and grandparents to shame, discovering and answering riddles in each of the vineyards. There’s a prize at the end of the day given at a closing awards ceremony.
Something slightly different: In mid-August (14th & 15th) there will be an antiques fair being held in La Halle in the market square in Nolay. Always good for a ‘mooch’, you never know you might find that bargain of the century, at least that’s the excuse your partner might give. While you are there, take a look up at the ceiling – the carpentry is impressive to say the least and weighs up to a staggering 800kgs (1700lbs) per square metre!

The 10th. 19th and 24th are street theatre nights in Nolay, and a good excuse to be back in the town.
If you miss these events because your schedule just doesn’t work, then still make sure you get to visit the town. There’s plenty of places to have a drink, after a wander around its medieval streets that have built up around its beautiful covered market and church, and you can also grab a bite to eat at one of the many restaurants in the town centre.
