LIVING YOUR DREAM

Some stories begin with a dream. Others with a photo. For Arjen and Annita, it was both. In this summer newsletter, we open with their remarkable emigration story: how a couple from the Netherlands turned their lives upside down, packed up their horses and left for Burgundy. From their first “home” experience in the Morvan to the transfer of their new home in Colmery, this story shows that dreams can come true.

Be inspired by their journey – and discover why “emigrating to France” sometimes simply means coming home.
Arjen and Annita followed their hearts
When did you first dream of moving to France?
It really started during the Emigration Fair in Houten in 2022. We were walking around and stopped at the France4U stand. There was a photo there – of the hills of the Morvan – and we both said at the same time: ‘That's it. That's where we want to be.’ It touched something in us.

What made you dare to take the plunge?
In 2023, a number of things happened in our lives that changed our perspective. We realised that life is too short to just dream. We wanted space, peace, nature – and a different rhythm. So we decided to sell our house and go for it.

What exactly were you looking for in a house in France?
It had to have room for our two horses. We also wanted some land, privacy, and a house that felt right. It didn't have to be perfect or finished... just a place we could transform into our own home.

How did you find this house?
We saw it online, on the France4U website. A charming house in Colmery. The photos immediately appealed to us, and the feeling lingered. We contacted Linda Bakker, and three weeks later we were already standing in the yard in France. It was quiet. Green. Peaceful. We knew right away.

What was your experience with France4U like?
Very warm, honest and clear. Linda guided us every step of the way and was always available. She even responded to our questions outside office hours. We really felt seen – not as customers, but as people.

Tell us about your first weeks in France.
We arrived in our self-built camper van, with our two dogs. The horses followed shortly afterwards. From the moment we drove into the hamlet of La Boissonnerie, we felt welcome. Neighbours came by with vegetables, jam, tips – and above all with sincere kindness.

What surprised you the most?
That everything fell into place so naturally. Of course, there is a lot to do – new windows, building a stable – but it feels good. We live simply, but with pleasure. We are outside more, breathing better. And we feel at home.

What are your plans for the future?
We are still settling in. But it already feels like we belong here. The dream has begun – and it is even more beautiful than we had imagined.
‘It doesn't take energy – it gives energy.’
