Must visit

History goes back a long way at this magnificent moated château, located in the village of Sully, to the west of Beaune. It nestles in the valley of the river Drée, surrounded by the rolling countryside of Burgundy and close to the world-renowned Côte de Beaune and its vineyards.

Sully Castle

Without a doubt, it is one of the most spectacular Renaissance chateaux in the region, with its impressive courtyard.

Sully is one of the largest chateaux in the region. Built on the site of the last stand by the Gauls against the Roman armies in 54 BC; the house grew into its current splendour during the 16th century - you can almost feel the history seeping into your pores as you stand and gaze at the manicured limestone façade of this family home that is still lived in today.

Guided tours of the interior are available, these are in French but with translations provided in text. After the tour, you can visit the extensive kitchen gardens, followed by a walk in the 17th Century designed park, where you can have a picnic. And why not finish off your day with a visit to the 13th Century chapel located in the estate grounds.

And, if you need another incentive to visit you can also sample the wines from the family vineyard of Chassagne-Montrachet.

Editor’s note: The Château is normally open every day to the public from April through to early November; however, please check their website for opening hours. To read more about its history, see here
